Enabling Cart Sync on Your Shopify Theme

Step-by-step setup for Cart Sync on a Shopify theme storefront, including dashboard settings and the Tapcart Cart Sync app embed.

Use this guide to turn on Cart Sync for a Shopify theme storefront so logged-in shoppers keep the same cart between web and your Tapcart app.

For an overview of how Cart Sync works, see Cart Sync: Keep Carts in Sync Between Web and App.

Before you start

  • Confirm your app is on Tapcart React Native release 21.8.0 or newer. If you are unsure, contact your AM or LiveChat.

  • Confirm you can open Settings → Cart Sync in the Tapcart dashboard. If that page is missing, ask Tapcart to enable Cart Sync for your app first.

  • Shoppers must be logged in for sync to run. Guest carts are not synced.

1. Enable Cart Sync in the Tapcart dashboard

  1. Open your Tapcart dashboard.

  2. Go to Settings → Cart Sync.

  3. Turn Enable Cart Sync on and save.

  4. Set your Abandoned Cart Window (hours a cart sits idle before an abandoned-cart push can fire; default is 4).

  5. Optionally turn off Abandoned Cart Push Notifications if you already send abandonment messages through another channel. Sync still works when this toggle is off.

Saving these settings provisions the sync experience. No separate push campaign setup is required for Tapcart's abandoned-cart push.

2. Enable the Tapcart Cart Sync app embed

  1. In Shopify admin, open the theme editor.

  2. Go to App embeds.

  3. Turn Tapcart Cart Sync on.

  4. Enter your Tapcart App ID in the embed settings.

    1. Open the Tapcart dashboard

    2. Click the shop name (top right) → Settings

    3. In App Settings, scroll to the Tapcart CLI / Application ID section

    4. Copy the App ID

  5. Save the theme.

Important: An enabled embed with a blank App ID fails silently. The script can load without syncing anything. Always fill in the App ID.

If you publish temporary "drop" themes by duplicating a base theme, enable the embed on the base theme you copy from, then spot-check after the first publish.

3. Verify sync

  1. Log into your storefront as a customer.

  2. Add an item to cart on web.

  3. Open the Tapcart app while logged into the same customer account.

  4. Confirm the item appears in the mobile cart.

You can also reverse the test: add in the app, then confirm the item appears on web while logged in.

Troubleshooting

Items do not sync and there are no obvious errors

Most often the app embed is on, but the App ID field is blank. Re-open the theme editor, fill in the App ID, and save.

Sync does nothing for a shopper

Confirm the shopper is logged in on both surfaces. Cart Sync is logged-in only by design.

Abandoned-cart push did not fire

Confirm:

  • Abandoned Cart Push Notifications is on in Settings → Cart Sync

  • The cart idle for the full Abandoned Cart Window

  • The latest cart activity was on web

  • The shopper has an active, push-enabled device

I do not use a Shopify theme

Skip the app embed and follow Cart Sync for Headless Storefronts instead.
