What is the Barcode/QR Scanner?
The Barcode/QR scanner connects your brick-and-mortar experience to mobile. Shoppers can scan a product barcode or QR code in your app to look up product details, pricing, and availability.
Why Barcode/QR Scanner + Tapcart?
The Barcode/QR Scanner and Tapcart integration allows you to merge the mobile and retail experience by giving your customers the ability to easily scan physical products to learn more about them. This can lead to an increase in engagement and boost in retention as you are creating a holistic experience for your customers.
How to Set Up Barcode/QR Scanner + Tapcart
Here’s how to set up the barcode/QR scanner:
The feature is available to Tapcart Enterprise customers. You will need to have your product’s barcodes enabled via Shopify on each variant. To make this a seamless experience you can use Shopify’s Retail Barcodes Label app! For more information on creating and setting up your barcodes within Shopify check out this guide.
In App Studio, barcode scanning is powered by a dedicated Camera screen (the barcode/QR scanner screen). Enabling the scanner on Search opens that Camera screen so shoppers can scan products in-store.
Steps
After your barcodes are enabled within Shopify, open the Tapcart Dashboard
Hover over App Studio and select Screens
Open the screen dropdown and select the Camera screen
Click Publish to publish the Camera (barcode/QR scanner) screen. The scanner will not work in the live app until this screen is published.
Open the screen dropdown again and select Search
Select the Search Input block on the canvas
In the right rail, turn on the Barcode Scanner toggle
Click Publish on the Search screen
Once published, shoppers will see a barcode/camera icon in the search bar. Tapping it opens the Camera screen so they can scan a barcode or QR code and jump to the matching product.
Important: Connecting or enabling barcode scanning alone is not enough. You must publish the Camera screen and enable the scanner on your Search Input block for the feature to appear in the live app.
Considerations
Product variants must have barcode values set in Shopify for scans to resolve correctly.
Your live app build must support the camera/barcode scanner. If the icon is visible in the dashboard but missing in the app, you may need an app update. Reach out to Tapcart Support if you are unsure.
Barcode scanning should be tested on a real device (TestFlight or Android APK). Camera scanning is not available in simulator or web preview environments.
If you utilize Instant Search, the Barcode/QR Scanner will not work within the app.
