Transferring Your App Between Apple Developer Accounts

How to transfer an existing iOS app from one Apple Developer account to another in App Store Connect, and what to do afterward so Tapcart can continue managing your app.

Transferring Your App Between Apple Developer Accounts

If you need to move your live iOS app from one Apple Developer account to another (for example, consolidating brands under a single organization), you can transfer the app in App Store Connect. This guide covers what to expect, Apple's requirements, and the Tapcart steps to complete after the transfer.

In this article:

  • What an app transfer does (and does not) change

  • Prerequisites and transfer criteria

  • How to initiate and accept the transfer

  • What happens during and after the transfer

  • Post-transfer steps with Tapcart

  • Recommended timing

Note: This article covers transferring an app between two Apple Developer accounts. If you need to convert an Individual Apple Developer membership to a Company/Organization, see Migrating your Apple Developer Account instead.

What an App Transfer Does

Apple allows you to transfer app ownership while keeping the app available on the App Store. During and after the transfer:

  • The app remains available for download

  • Ratings and reviews are preserved

  • Customers continue to receive updates

  • The Bundle ID stays the same (it cannot be changed after a build has been uploaded)

Customers do not need to download a new app. The App Store listing stays the same listing under new ownership.

Prerequisites

Before starting, confirm the following:

  • Both the current (transferor) and receiving (recipient) accounts are enrolled as Company/Organization accounts, are in good standing, and have accepted the latest Paid and Free Apps agreements

  • The Account Holder of the current account will initiate the transfer

  • The Account Holder of the receiving account will accept the transfer

  • You have the receiving Account Holder's Apple ID and Team ID

  • No app update is currently in App Review or pending release

  • You have notified your Tapcart Implementation Specialist or Account Manager that a transfer is planned

Apple publishes the full eligibility checklist here: App transfer criteria.

Common Transfer Blockers

Apple will not allow the transfer to start if the app has one of these statuses:

  • Processing for Distribution

  • Waiting for Review

  • In Review

  • Accepted

  • Pending Developer Release

  • Pending Apple Release

Additional common blockers include:

  • The app has never had a version released to the App Store

  • The app is available for pre-order in any country or region

  • Either account has unfinished agreement updates

  • In-App Purchase product IDs conflict with apps already in the recipient account

Resolve these items before your planned transfer window.

Step 1: Initiate the App Transfer

Only the Account Holder of the current Apple Developer account can start the transfer.

  1. Sign in to App Store Connect.

  2. Open the app you want to transfer.

  3. Go to App Information under General.

  4. Scroll to Additional Information and click Transfer App.

  5. Confirm the app meets Apple's criteria, then continue.

  6. Enter the recipient Account Holder's Apple ID and Team ID.

  7. Review Apple's terms, agree, and click Request Transfer.

After initiation, the app status includes Pending App Transfer. The recipient has 60 days to accept. While pending, some metadata and pricing edits are restricted.

Step 2: Accept the App Transfer

Only the Account Holder of the receiving Apple Developer account can accept.

  1. Sign in to App Store Connect on the destination account.

  2. Go to Business (Agreements, Tax, and Banking).

  3. Under App Transfers, click Review.

  4. Enter any required metadata (such as support URL and privacy policy URL).

  5. Review privacy details and user access settings.

  6. Agree to the terms and click Accept.

Apple notes that processing can take up to two business days. During that time, the app status shows Processing App Transfer.

What Happens During and After the Transfer

  • The live App Store listing remains available to customers

  • The App ID moves to the recipient account

  • Once complete, the app no longer appears in the original App Store Connect account

  • Historical sales/payment data before the transfer stays with the original account; post-transfer data belongs to the recipient

Some capabilities require follow-up on the new account. Common examples:

  • Push notifications: New APNs certificates or keys may need to be created for the recipient team and shared with Tapcart / your push provider

  • Apple Pay: Merchant IDs are not transferred. Existing certificates may continue working until they expire or until the next update, when a new merchant ID is typically required on the recipient account

  • Provisioning: New provisioning profiles must be created under the recipient account for future builds

Step 3: Complete Post-Transfer Steps with Tapcart

After the transfer completes, complete these Tapcart-related steps so we can continue building and submitting updates:

  1. Invite Tapcart as Admin on the destination Apple Developer account. Follow Inviting Tapcart to Your Apple Developer Account.

  2. Confirm Paid Apps Agreement / PLA is accepted on the destination account.

  3. Provision a new App Store Connect API key for automated builds: Provisioning an App Store Connect API Key for iOS Builds.

  4. Notify your Implementation Specialist or Account Manager that the transfer is complete so Tapcart can update internal app configuration, certificates, and push credentials as needed.

  5. Plan the next app update carefully. The first update after transfer is often when push, Apple Pay, and signing changes need to be validated.

Important: Until Tapcart has Admin access on the new account and any required certificates/keys are updated, we may be unable to submit builds or manage the App Store listing.

Recommended Timing

  • Schedule the transfer early in the week (Monday or Tuesday) so Apple processing and any follow-up work have buffer before the weekend

  • Avoid starting a transfer while an update is in review or pending release

  • Allow time after acceptance for Apple's processing window (up to two business days) plus Tapcart post-transfer setup

  • If you want a live working session during the transfer, coordinate with your Account Manager or Implementation Specialist in advance
