Google Play Console Requirements Update

Google has rolled out enhanced verification requirements for all Google Play developer accounts. These requirements, originally announced in July 2023, now apply to both new and existing developer accounts. This article explains what you need to do to stay compliant.

In this article:

  • What's changed

  • Verification requirements for organizations

  • Steps to verify your account

  • What happens if you don't verify

What's Changed

Google now requires all developer accounts to verify their identity and provide additional organization information. This applies to accounts created before and after the policy change. The goal is to improve trust and transparency on Google Play.

If you created your Google Play Console account before these requirements were introduced, you'll receive emails from Google prompting you to complete verification.

Verification Requirements for Organizations

You'll need to provide the following information:

Account holder details:

  • Legal name (will be shown on Google Play)

  • Legal address (will be shown on Google Play)

  • Contact email address (verified via OTP)

  • Contact phone number (verified via OTP)

  • Developer email address (shown on Google Play, verified via OTP)

  • Developer phone number (shown on Google Play, verified via OTP)

Organization details:

  • Organization type: Company/Business, Non-profit, Academic, or Government

  • Organization size (number of employees)

  • Organization phone number

  • Organization website

  • D-U-N-S Number (may be required for organization verification)

Steps to Verify Your Account

  1. If verification is required, you'll see a banner or notification prompting you to complete it

  2. Navigate to Account details in the left sidebar

  3. Fill in all required fields and verify your contact information via the one-time passwords Google sends

  4. Submit your information for review

For detailed documentation from Google, see the Play Console verification requirements.

What Happens If You Don't Verify

If you don't complete verification within Google's deadline:

  • You may lose the ability to update existing apps

  • New app submissions may be blocked

  • In extreme cases, your developer account could be suspended
